Object of the Aviation Medical Society

The Objects of AMSANZ-New Zealand are defined in the Society Rules and are the following:

  1. the cultivation and promotion of aviation medicine and related sciences or disciplines,
  2. the provision of an authoritative body of opinion in relation to aviation medicine,

The Society has a number of activities to support these objects:

Meetings of members - generally an annual conference and scientific meeting, typically in September. The meetings are supported by the Patterson Trust which funds an international speaker at each conference. Every three years, the Society meets together with its sister Society in Australia, alternating betweent the two countries.

The collection and dissemination by or among members of scientific knowledge and the publication of articles related to aviation medicine and related sciences and of its meetings. This is largely achieved through the annual conference.

The conducting of essay or other appropriate competitions open to medical or science undergraduates. The Society funds a prize for the top student each year in the final examinations for the Diploma of Aviation Medicine awarded by the University of Otago.

The endowment and support of research and development of aviation medicine. The Society helped fund the publication of "Joint Venture" a book on the history of aviation medicine in New Zealand by Bruce Golden.

The co-operation, affiliation or holding of joint conferences with bodies having similar objects, within Australasia or elsewhere, most importantly with the Aviation Medical Society of Australia and New Zealand (Australia).
